Zip is a file format used for data compression and archiving. A zip file contains one or more files that have been compressed, to reduce file size, or stored as is. The zip file format permits a number of compression algorithms.

7z is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression, encryption and pre-processing algorithms. The 7z format initially appeared as implemented by the 7-Zip archiver

gzip is a software application used for file compression and decompression. The program was created by Jean-Loup Gailly and Mark Adler as a free software replacement for the compress program used in early Unix systems.

bzip2 is a free and open source file compressor that uses the Burrows–Wheeler algorithm. It is developed and maintained by Julian Seward.

In computing, tar (derived from tape archive) is both a file format (in the form of a type of archive bit-stream) and the name of a program used to handle such files. The format was created in the early days of Unix and standardized by POSIX.1-1988[1] and later POSIX.1-2001.

These File formats are very popular in these days. Many of us use these types of file compression extension to compress files with high ratio. These compression are use by many popular companies. for eg:- In Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7 there is a file compression format which is built in these Windows which is zip compression, Google also use 7z compression with Chrome to compress it to exe installation file etc. Examples of these files are many and you can see these examples by searching with Google.
